Inauguration of the Hotel and Cultural Center and the Heritage of Balibó

On 20 March 2015, the Secretary of State for Tourism Art and Culture, Maria Isabel de Jesus Ximenes, accompanied by her entourage, visited the Municipality of Maliana, Administrative Post of Balibó, in order to participate in the inauguration and opening of the Hotel Forte and Cultural Center and Heritage of Balibó "Balibó House Trust" rehabilitated inside the Forte. Nearly five (5) journalists, three (3) Australians, one (1) New Zealander and one (1) English were killed while covering the Indonesian invasion of East Timor, in the border area between Timor- Leste and Indonesia in 1975.
The Inauguration and opening of the Hotel, the Cultural Center and the Heritage was attended by the Ambassador of Australia for Timor-Leste, Mr. Peter Doyle - former Premier Vitoria, Australia, Mr. Steve Bracks, Former Prime Minister and current Minister of Planning and Strategic Investment, Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Secretary State for Tourism Art and Culture, Mrs. Maria Isabel de Jesus Ximenes, local Authorities and local community.
Secretary of State for Tourism Art and Culture in her speech said that the "fort of Balibó is recognized from the time of ancestors until now, as a center of order of defense and administration in Timor-Leste. The Government gives importance to the architectural heritage and therefore appeals to the community that live near the fort to always collaborate in the preservation of historical place and do not devalue the architectural heritage that are already destroyed. This heritage and others that are scattered throughout the territory, they are as testimonials to help us understand our history and strengthen our national identity.
This project is as an instrument to develop the tourism sector, improve the local economy through job creation, and offer new business opportunities to ensure the sustainability of this project and those who live near this place.
